Also, don't forget, that during the timeline of PS/SS, Hagrid didn't 
know that Peter was still alive, nor that he had been the one to 
betray Lily and James.  Of course, he *did* have his assumptions (as 
did the rest of the wizarding world) about Sirius Black, who was 
still considered "evil" at that point.  

Perhaps Hagrid had just forgotten.  (Or JKR had neglected to slip in 
a detail of Hagrid being "hesitant" or "unsure" when making this 
statement to Harry.)
