If Snape wanted Harry to see the Pensieve memory, then I think the credibility
of the memory has to be questioned.
If Snape wanted Harry to see what an arrogant git his father was and left the
Pensieve out knowing Harry would be too tempted (as would most of us, if we
were truly honest with ourselves) not to look, then it follows that he had a
specific memory in mind.
And if so, that means he would have controlled when the memory started and,
through his intervention at the end, when it stopped.
It is even possible he could have doctored it.
Now, you ask, why did Lupin and Sirius readily agree it happened? Because
it is entirely possible that something like it did happen. (Remember, I said
doctored, not created) and Lupin and Sirius felt guilty over stuff that did
happen.
We don't know if they knew the specific incident Harry was speaking of.
James clearly played with a Snitch all the time, so for Lupin to comment on it
does not mean total recall of the incident.
But again, if this was Snape's master plan, then it follows that he knew, to the
second, what he wanted Harry to see. It further is possible that whatever is
before and after contains images he didn't want Harry to see.
And if he wanted Harry to see how bad his father and Sirius were, perhaps
he didn't want him to see how bad Snape himself was,.
For the record, I do not believe Snape wanted Harry to see it. I think his rage
was just too pure and the memory too painful. Perhaps Harry's view of James
would now be clouded, but I don't think Snape would view Harry witnessing
such humiliation as a worthwhile trade-off for that to happen.
So, I believe the memory, and I believe Snape wanted that memory nowhere
near Harry's eyes.
Now, some other Snape matters and one Hermione matter.
* Re: The theory that V-Mort's spell against Harry rebounded because he
went back on a debt to Snape.
No, the spell rebounded because of Lily's sacrifice. I'm willing to go so far with
Snape, but I'm not going to agree a backroom deal between the Dark Lord
and his D.E. is more powerful than a mother's willingness to die for her baby.
* Snape is the reason Harry's going to have an easier time of it at Privet
Drive.
No, I think Dumbledore is the reason.
My vision of Snape is of a guy who truly does hate Harry the person, but
knows that Harry the Prophecy must survive, which is why he tries to save
Harry's life while taking what shots he can to make that life miserable.
Again, my overall view of Snape is of a guy who absolutely hates his current
situation, but because of honor -- loyalty to D-Dore -- and survival -- his life
wouldn't be worth anything if he tried to go independent of D-Dore and V-Mort
at this point -- he sticks it out.
I don't think Snape would give two damns what Harry goes through at Privet
Drive, so long as the protective spell holds.
* Hermione is a Junior Death Eater in the making.
No, they would kill her on the spot for being a mudblood, remember?
