Me:
I guess I'm as sappy as you are Jenny!
My mother was talking about how she loved Nancy Drew stories when
she was young, and that she still re-reads them today. She said
that she couldn't imagine doing that if Nancy had been killed off at
the end of the series. That kind of sums it up for me and Harry. I
want to revisit these books, with a reflective smile, as I read them
to my grandchildren. I would feel so horrible, for all of us, if
this wonderful, magical adventure ended in tragedy. It would take
away the pure wonder and awe from earlier impressions of JKR's
brilliant series. I hope that she took the collective gasp of the
4,000 children attending the reading yesterday (when she hinted that
Harry might not live beyond the 7th installment) as a reminder of
how devastating her writing could be. She has the opportunity to
create something that will be remembered as triumphant or something
pointless and empty. I hope she chooses triumphant. If given JKR's
opportunity, I would rather create something that may be
considered "sappy" by some - which produced smiles for my readers,
rather than something more "realistic" - which would unnecessariy
produce tears.
Beth (Still waiting for JKR's phone call asking me my
opinion. . .)
