  Harry didn't wish for Gryffindor, though, he just said, "Not 
Slytherin".  

  I read an interesting theory on another message board (if it's been 
posted here, too, I apoligize).  The basic idea was that the Sorting 
Hat placed four people in Gryffindor who would represent one of each 
of the Hogwarts houses.  There was no doubt about Ron being a 
Gryffindor, however Harry was considered for Slytherin, and Hermione 
for Ravenclaw.  During the sorting in SS/PS, it says that the hat 
took a while to decide with Neville, and it's been pointed out that 
he has the qualities of a Hufflepuff.  So, does everyone get a 
choice, or did the hat put these four together in one house for 
another reason?  It's interesting to think about, especially when you 
consider the new Sorting Hat song in OOP.
