I've no idea why Sirius' death didn't affect me. There are lots of
upset people posting, but not me! The short term advantage from
Sirius' dying was that Harry was then able to repel Voldemort with
his anguish - the stone-cold Lord seems to be allergic to affection!
Without this Harry may well have been crushed. (Just a thought, as
there is a picture of Mrs Black, and other members of the Black
family - is there an animated picture of Sirius himself somewhere?)
Long term, though - (and this sounds sinister - sorry Slytherin
haters!) removing Snape's last living aggressive rival -(Lupin is
more docile) seems to be forecasting an increase in the potion
master's significance. Harry's father figures - Mr Weasley, Sirius
and the 'new' side to James Potter all take serious hits in OoTP.
But Snape is treated with more compassion it seems - maybe Dumbledore
is forcing Snape and Harry together because Rowling intends Snape to
be a replacement figure? I have stuff to back this scary idea up!
Dumbledore shields Snape from harm and accusations much as he does
with Harry, and trusts them both. Snape through occlumency sees the
memory Harry has tried to keep secret about the sorting hat almost
placing him in Slytherin. And the pensieve - Dumbledore knows full
well that Harry can't resist it, (he probably hasn't told Snape about
Harry's knowledge of it) and as a result it shows Harry Snape has
more integrity than he thought. It also shows them both that they are
no strangers when it comes to having a miserable life. Snape at
school was the most knowledgeable in the dark arts, (Why?) James
Potter hated this subject - Harry is the best in his year. Harry and
Snape hate each other because they are too proud and hurt to accept
they have things in common. Snape's main fixation with Harry is his
fear of the past returning, (PoA) 'like father like son, Potter!'
(I'm hoping that the next time he says that in future books Harry
will give him an honest reply!) He, however, doesn't have a bad word
to say about Lily, suggesting a possible crush on her. (He may blame
James, or himself for her death - and this would explain his leaving
the Death Eaters, and his coldness around Harry who constantly
reminds him of the reality.)
I also believe Snape puts on at least some of his nasty act because
he is spying for Dumbledore. Notice how that whenever he is among the
Slytherins, especially Draco (Snape's 'favourite student') - he is
his most unfair to Harry - and this is the best way to ensure Draco
doesn't get suspicious and tell his father. So...this post started
with Sirius - who tried his best, but has been mostly notifiable by
his absence in Harry's life. He may also have died because he is too
rash to advise Harry, resulting in Harry worrying more about Sirius's
safety than his own. Lupin is a good advisor for Harry, but he is
often ill. What Harry the ill- tempered teenager really needs a
strong, clever (unfortunately ill-tempered, also) mentor who
understands him, (And who has been there for him several times) and
Dumbledore knows this.
Unfortunately Dumbledore also knows there's one huge similarity which
is a big setback - both Harry and Snape have a malicious streak.
Draco is an extremely annoying brat (and I know how having one like
that mocking you all the time feels like) but like many brats he is
all bark and no bite. Harry's gang in the past 2 books have hexed him
into all sorts of horrible creatures. While this is funny, it's also
excessive. Harry is getting more rash and stroppy, and often regrets
things he says (And will he use Crucio again?) Hermione leading
Umbridge into the forest to get beaten up by Centaurs seems more
vicious. At 15 in the pensieve dented pride (In front of the girls)
may well have caused Snape to viciously lash out.
Finally Harry's last idea about Snape in OoTP - about he would 'never
forgive Snape...never...' This sounds ominous whatever it means.
Snape seems to be annoyingly stuck at the mental age of fifteen - but
surely, as he deliberately violated Snape's privacy, isn't there
forgiveness more recently needed on Harry's side? Just a thought -
but the surge of Voldemort's hatred Harry felt when looking at
Dumbledore - maybe this is now coming up when Snape appears?
So that's the end of my (controversial?) post. Dumbledore's trying
to flatten the grudges - who will forgive who first? If they can't
Harry will be stuck like Snape is, and they may both die. Has Sirius
stepped aside for Severus?
