Just thought I'd jump in with where my thoughts led me.  Maybe I
missed it but I don't see much about Lily's family.  Much of what is
said is open to interpretation.  Maybe they weren't all muggles.
Maybe she came from a wizard family and Petunia is a squib.  Petunia
would have all the knowledge but none of the talent.  Boy that would
sure make me hate everything about the wizarding world.  Maybe the
fallen relationship was Snape & Petunia (hee, hee, hee).

I think the fact that Snape called Lily a mudblood in that memory pretty
much says that she is a witch born to muggle parents.  I think Petunia was
just extremely jealous of the attention her sister got after recieving her
letter from Hogwarts, and never got over it.
