On Harry performing the Cruciatus Curse:

I think intent is important. In modern muggle terms, I think he acted out
of rage and grief at his godfather's "passing beyond the veil" and there was
no premeditation. I think it was spur of the moment
"I've-got-to-stop-her-make-her-suffer-nothing-else-is-really-working!" It
was a desperate throw.

Harry's not malicious, and I have no real fear of him sliding down a
slippery slope. I know there's a lot of belief in such things just becoming
"habit", but I think for someone as intelligent as harry, that would be a
copout. People have a lot more control over their minds and what they do
than many allow - and most people willingly fall *into* habit instead of
thinking things through deliberately each day, largely to save time and
energy for things that *can't* be habitual. Example: if my commute to work
on the most obvious route is frustrating and winds up with lot sof delays
and accidents, will I proactively take time on the weekend and research new
alternate routes and test a new one out once a wekk until I find the best
one? Probably not - because other things demand my attention on the
weekends. instead, I'll just fall into the habit of going the most obvious
and apparently direct route and learn to cope with the time by doing other
things in the car - like listening to books on tape, classical music or
learning a new language.

Causing someone pain like that and exercising an Unforgivable Curse is not
the stuff which makes for habit. I think Harry is *already* somewhat
insensitized to the emotional pain of others because of what he's had to
endure in his own life, and the losses he's sustained already which in some
ways make him so much older than his years. I will be *very* surprised not
to see him grow somewhat closer to Neville because of their shared losses as
time passes - not that I think Neville will replace the Trio as the
innermost circle, because that bond was formed so early - but I believe that
an *inner* circle will begin to develop which will be the bedrock for the
next generation's "OotP" type of young DA elite - and I think we saw that
core hop on the thestrals and go to London and face deadly danger together.
