Actually I think he showed in PS/SS, COS, POA and GOF to be a fairly good
desicion maker depsite he youth. . a bit implusive at time but then he really
didn't have any choice.
In PS/SS, they tried to notify a teacher but were turned away. IMO
Dumbledore, himself all but set the kids up to go after the stone. He taught them or
allowed them to learn just enough to help them through it. In COS time was of
the essence, should they have gone to a teacher? Certainly. Would any of the
teacher's have listed to a pair of 2nd years? Probably not. Could any of the
teachers have managed to open the Chamber? Once again probably not since it
required a parselmouth to get in. In POA Ron was attacked and dragged off into
the Whomping Willow by a great hulking beast of a dog. They went to rescue
him. Once again "time" was of the essence. In OotP I think that he learned a
great deal about being implusive and emotional adn about pride as well.
I also think that JKR has a reason for showing him to be an excellent D.A.D.A
instructor.
