Hello,
I don't know how many people have seen the J.K. Rowling Q&A session
transcript from the Royal Albert Hall public reading. But she gave us
a couple of really good clues about Severus Snape. All Snape fans
should be interested in this.
I quote:
"Stephen Fry (heavily paraphrased):
Then there's characters like Snape, who are bad but there is a certain
ambiguity about him. You can't quite decide because there's something
quite sad about him. Something very lonely. We're slowly (after five
books) getting the idea that maybe he is not so bad after all.
JK Rowling:
Yes, but you shouldn't think he's too nice. Let me just say that. It
is worth keeping an eye on old Severus Snape, definitely."
...and...
"Stephen Fry:
We have another question from another competition winner, who is
called Jackson Long. Let's have a look at your question.
JACKSON LONG:
Professor Snape has always wanted to be Defence Against the Dark Arts
teacher. In book five he doesn't get the job. Why doesn't Professor
Dumbledore let him be the DADA teacher?
JK Rowling:
That is an excellent question and the reason is
I have to be careful
not to say too much. However, when Professor Dumbledore took Professor
Snape onto the staff and Professor Snape said he'd like to teach
Defence Against the Dark Arts please and Professor Dumbledore felt
that it might bring out the worst in Professor Snape, so Dumbledore
said: "I think we'll let you teach potions and see how you get along
there."
What do I think?
"So DADA would bring out the worst in Snape. Therefore, Snape would be
seduced back to the Dark Side - I think that Snape loves the Dark
Arts, I think that he is fascinated by them (it probably has a lot to
do with his upbringing as well), and that there is the big problem.
These two comments have me thinking that, perhaps our Potion's Master
likes to be in the grey area. He isn't black, he isn't white, he's
neutral. He likes to swing left and right, depending on the mood. And
he seems to be the only one. So why does Dumbledore trust him so much?
Even if he did save Dumbledore's life (this is just pure specualtion
on my part), Dumbledore did not trust him enough to give him the DADA
position, so this leaves me confused again...!" - This is me quoting
myself from my Snape website S.S. The url,if you want to see more of
my Snape ideas is http://www.designerpotions.com/ss/sssleuthing
What do other people think of these clues?
-Cindy (who will love Snape forever, no matter what!)
