You're correct in stating that nothing really good came from Harry's 'being the hero' in OotP. Maybe that was the point.
Harry's still a teenager. He isn't perfect, and yet he's tossed into these situations every year, and comes out on top. This year he learned that he can fail as well.
It was a very important book, IMHO. Harry's learning from the things that he has done right - and more importantly - the things he has done wrong.
JKR said from the get-go that this would be a dark book. She was right. Sh..tuff happens, and it's not always for the best. My only hope is that Harry takes what he has learned and applies himself not to make the same mistakes in the future.
Maybe his accomplishment in this book was learning to improve upon his weaknesses.
...one could also argue that Harry did do something great this year, however. He started the DA!
