OK, now I know I'm getting farther and farther off-track from the 
book, but... he could just chop it off, or pull it back.  Nothing 
makes greasy hair worse than length.

Although that does give food for thought, because why would Snape 
keep his hair shoulder-length?  It's the worst for getting in your 
face.  Unless it's an extension of his insecurity-- because with hair 
that length you could always, if necessary, hide behind it.  I've 
never noticed Snape doing this, but I suppose that could be the 
reason.

Maybe he's trying to hide his nose, and considers his hair the lesser 
demon to contend with...

Ah well, the hair still bothers me, but I guess there must be a 
reason somewhere in the machine.
