There's also the fact that Hermione hasn't spent Christmas or major
parts of summer vacation with her parents in years.  It's supposedly not
as big of a deal as it is here in the US, but I'm 22 and I still haven't
missed a Christmas with my parents.  :)  

Only in the latest did Hermione mention their sadness at Christmas break
without her.  But maybe Hermione feels the same way as JKR: "They're
*dentists!*  There's not much there to tell!"  Hermione's just gotten
too many tastes of excitment to hang out with the dentists!
