I understand what you're saying, Scott, but it is the way of the
world that our parents don't understand us and that we choose lives
different than theirs, according to our abilities. It may even be
foreshadowing about Harry's relationship with his deceased parents.
To misquote *Gods and Monsters*, an excellent movie, "It was like a
giraffe was born into a family of farmers and, having no idea what to
do with it, they hitched it to a plow." Hermione's life is going to
be very different than her parents' and, while she loves them and
sympathizes with them, she's managed to unhitch the plow and is
loping away.
It's hard to go back and make small talk about the plow.
