Devika said that "we don't know if Karkaroff was in Azkaban for a year."
I say he was, based on these quotes from GoF:
 
In the Pensieve scene Crouch informs Karkaroff:  "[Rosier] was caught
shortly after you were too."
 
Earlier in the book Sirius tells HRH that Rosier was killed by Aurors
"the year before Voldemort fell."
