Has it been stated clearly somewhere that V. was a Slytherin, or have we
just assumed it? Curiouser and curiouser. . .

First, the whole theory of LV/HP as one time divided type entity is
interesting, and somewhat mindboggling while yet making sense in a strange
way.

Second, it is canon that Riddle was in Slytherin:

On page 99 of the U.S. Scholastic paperback of Sorcerer's Stone (the one
with the cover of L.V. in the forest, not the quidditch scene):

"And what are Slytherin and Hufflepuff?"
"School houses. There's four. Everyone says Hufflepuff are a lot 'o
 duffers, but-"
"I bet I'm in Hufflepuff," said Harry gloomily.
"Better Hufflepuff than Slytherin," said Hagrid darkly. 'There's not a
single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin. You know who
was one."

According to COS, Hagrid went to Hogwarts with Riddle, thereby making
him a reliable source, unlike Ron who seconds the Riddle in Slytherin
information on the train to Hogwarts when Harry meets both Ron and
Hermione.
