One thought I'd had on this, is that if Snape is planning on ever having to 
go back to the DE and spy, he may WANT those rumors to continue and do what he 
can to push them forward. What better way to TEACH the Dark Arts than to 
pretend to teach how to defend against them, because students can't learn to defend 
themselves against something they don't understand. So, even if Snape's 
priorities are elsewhere, he may have started those rumors himself, knowing they 
would continue on, figuring that it would look good should he have to return to 
Voldemort's fold.
