Lupin was on the Hogwart's Express because he was appointed as a teacher at 
the last moment, Lupin says in POA that Dumbledore had to work hard to convince 
some teachers that he was trustworthy. Also the fact that he had transformed 
the night before the term started. Why else did he sleep from 11 AM to about 7 
PM on the train?
