How would the fact that he had transformed the night before mean that he had
to take the Express? I agree he probably did recently because he was so
tired, but I don't think having to travel to Kings Cross, then sleeping in
an awkward position for 8 hours on a train with a lot of rowdy kids would be
easier for him than flooing into DD's office or apparating to Hogsmede and
spending the day in bed at Hogwarts. I don't think being appointed at the
last minute would make either of these options unworkable either. On the
other hand, maybe he can't afford floo powder, and apparating takes more
concentration than he can manage in his exhausted state.

Still, he did have the chocolate. But maybe he's just a chocolate nut (as
many fic authors like to believe) and having it is yet another happy
coincidence. Canon hasn't told us for sure, so I guess we'll never know.

Maybe he just wanted to take the train to get an early gander at Harry.
