Geoff:
I think that, when you are the age of Harry and Ron, you are only 
just beginning to focus on serious relationships with girls. Male to 
male bonding is something which happens at this age and continues 
into adult life. If you read C S Lewis' "The Four Loves", this is one 
of the group he discusses.

It's not sexual, it's what you might call the man-to-man thing, 
shared interests (sport, Quidditch, musics, hobbies etc). I still 
find it useful to have a male friend to whom I can talk freely and I 
have had friends and colleagues in the past who have used me as a 
safety valve or a sounding board.
