PS/SS, Ch 5 (p61, UK pb)

Hagrid says, "...some o'the best that I ever saw were the only ones 
with magic in 'em in a long line o' Muggles - look at yer mum!"

This is a clear statement that Lily's family were Muggles. Assuming 
Hagrid's right, of course. ;-)

Harry evidently believes him though, because in CoS (Ch 17, p 233, UK 
pb) he refers to "My common *Muggle-born* [his emphasis] mother".
