Snape: Potions Master for 14 years

While rereading Oop last night, I came across the passage where 
Umbridge is inspecting Snape.  She asks how long he has been 
teaching, and he replies almost 14 years (don't have the books at 
work, of course :(.  Something clicked, and I remembered Dumbledore 
hired Trelawny after she made the prediction, 16 years ago, for 
protection.  Could the same be said for Snape?  If Harry is 15 and 
change in the book, and the attack took place when he was 18 mos old, 
does the time line fit?  Snape saves Harry, then works at Hogwarts 
for protection from Lord Thingy?
