I liked the idea another listie mentioned a few days (weeks??) ago --
simply put, people who are given the Dementor's Kiss eventually
degenerate into Dementors themselves.
I like this theory a lot, as it explains *why* Dementors want to go
about sucking up souls -- they were deprived of their own, thus they
are "soul-hungry".
So, where did the first Dementor come from? I thought maybe it was a
spell gone awry (perhaps the same immortality spells Tom used that so
disfigured his physical form, only gone *more* wrong). So some
wizard, questing for immortality, accidentally ousts his own soul,
thereby turning himself into a monster. This monster naturally feels
the want of a soul and the emotions that go along with having a soul.
Therefore, it "eats" souls when it can and survives by feeding on
emotions in the meantime.

I like your theory! There has been a lot of talk lately about the
unforgivable curses. It does seem that to be able to use them it's
necessary to have a cruel and hateful disposition. I wonder if the
unforgivable curses begin to take a toll on the person who uses them.
Do these curses degenerate or consume the person that performs them?
Maybe the Dementors can sense this depravity. Are they searching for
their own "lost souls?"
