There are many variations of the Basilisk myth, all of them, that I
found, include a deadly stare, but only some included deadly breath;
and let's not forget poison fangs.

To show how firm the belief was in the legend of the Basilisk, there
are historical record which claim for a fact, that a small region of
Italy was decimated by Basilisk breath.

So, I guess my point is that JKR may not have strayed too far from the
more common definitions of a Basilisk. 

Search Google for Basilisk and you will find tons of references.

Just a thought.
