Carol responds:

I think you're right that Karkaroff is a good deal older than Snape,
which may mean that his use of Karkaroff's first name is a sign of
contempt rather than closeness, though it's impossible to tell based
on such limited evidence. I also find it odd that Karkaroff, with his
Russian name, speaks such good English, which suggests, but doesn't
prove that he attended Hogwarts at some point, possibly even at the
same time as Tom Riddle, which would put him in his sixties in GoF in
contrast with Snape's mid-thirties. He would certainly have been in
Slytherin, but not with Snape.

Carol, who meant to say more about Karkaroff and Durmstrang, which
seems to have different standards than Hogwarts, but realized that
she's late for an appointment!
