Potioncat:
When the Drumstrang group arrives in GoF, Karkaroff says something 
like "good old Hogwarts" as if he once attended or taught there.  (I 
thought the former, but suddenly relized it could be the latter.)
I don't think he'd be as old as Riddle.  It doesn't seem he would 
have been a DE for that long.  But that's more a feeling than 
anything.
