(a fellow Southerner...except when I prefer to be a
Yankee.) Well, if we translate the series into Southern, we'll give
the Malfoys a rich cultured Low Country drawl. Snape too, I think.
It's very nice. Hagrid of course will have something similar to Jeb
Clampet, a mountain twang. Not sure what to do with McGonagall,
although there are several strong old English accents along the outer
banks. Perhaps the Weasleys would have a Maryland flair to their
speech? The pair from the bus and Tom could have a real down home
country accent.
My gentle point being that in the South we have quite a few accents.
(I no longer do, of course.)How is this canon? There are quite a few
accents in this series. Some I can understand as being perhaps better
educated than others or bluecollar rather than white collar. I have
no idea where most of them might be from, or what that might tell
me. Things that might speak to readers from the UK, but not to me.
It is fun though, to read and to hear on the movies.
I would love to hear the British version of the books on tape.
Because to be honest, I had trouble understanding some of the words
in the movie at first, and no one is really using a strong accent!
