Here's my thoughts on it. The prophecy stated that there was someone that would have powers to vanquish Voldemort. It would be done by someone born to parents who thrice defied him and who was also born at the end of the 7th month. The prophecy also said that "either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives". Voldemort, in his quest for immortality wanted to go and just "take care" of this one that was born with powers to vanquish him. He probably figured he could very easily do away with a baby, right ? Turns out he was wrong and the rest of the story is in print. As for the prophecy, he only heard part of it and as a result he "marked him as equal" without knowing that was going to happen. In doing this he set the prophecy in motion so to speak. As he regained power/strength, etc., he wanted to hear the rest of it and set about to get the prophecy and hear it. Only the persons name on the prophecy can remove it or else risk going mad. Voldemort couldn't get it himself because it was in the Ministry of Magic so he lured Harry there to get it for him.
Hope that makes sense ! Hope I didn't leave anything out or mix up the explanation !
