Carol:
This I agree with. But I don't think James realized what Lily
intended. Note that she *didn't* run, though that's what he was
telling her to do.

Did Lily run? Most seem to assume that she didn't, but I have
wondered about this.
We have from canon when Harry faces the Dementors that James told her
to run and Harry then hears 'someone stumbling from the room' this is
Lily running out of the room with Harry as he had to also be in the
same room to hear all this.
We know that James fought Voldemort, but for how long before he was
killed? Voldemort has shown that when he has a plan of action he is
pretty quick to kill. ex: 'Kill the Spare' and how quickly he went
for the kill in OOP.
We know that James and Lily's bodies and Harry were all found inside
the wreck of the house.
We don't know how big the house is. Is it a cottage or a castle or
some size in between. How far did Lily have to run to get out the
back door. I doubt she could have just ran under Voldemort's arm and
gotten out of the house that way.
We don't know if anyone else came with Voldemort that night, most
seem to assume someone else had to be there. How do we know that
there wasn't a DE standing at the back door keeping her from running
out that way.
My point is that I have found no canon proof to say that Lily didn't
try to get away. This is another one of those things that, to me
anyway, will have to be put in writing before I will believe her not
running had something to do with the 'old magic' that protected Harry
from Voldemort. I personally think that she did try to run she just
didn't get very far, but then I also believe that she had her wand.
After all they know Voldemort is after them, seems to me if your
being hunted and know it you would sleep with that wand under your
pillow and have it with you at all times.
