Most of us are familiar with the fact that in the American editions of
GoF, in the first chapter, where Voldemort and Peter/Wormtail are in a
conversation about their plans, a reference to 'Curse' was changed to
'Murder' as in (Am Ed pg 12) "One more /murder/... my faithful servant
at Hogwarts... Harry Potter is as good as mine...".
We have discussed this before, but as I was re-reading that section
last night, my attention was drawn to Frank Bryce's narrative. Except
for one section just before he is murdered, Frank doesn't speak; his
thoughts are related to us in narrative, and in that narrative, Frank
makes references to murder. Example: "He was dangerous -- a madman.
And he was planning MORE murders -- the boy, Harry..." in which Franks
thoughts are reflecting on what he has heard Wormtail and Voldemort
discussing.
That got me wondering if Frank's narrative had also been changed. How
could Frank make references to 'murder' and 'more murder' if the
original British text said 'curse'. Obviously, there is the reference
to killing Bertha Jorkins, but several times Frank makes references to
future murders.
Voldemort makes references to murdering Bertha and USING Harry, and I
think that's what struck me as strange about Frank's reference to
'more murders'. In the past, we have concentrated on the passage where
Voldemort speaks and 'curse' is changed to 'murder', but I've never
before tried to reconcile this change with all the other reference to
murder in those few pages between pages 10 and 13.
So, I am wondering if there is anyone who has both additions who would
be willing to scan that section of the book and look for changes or
inconsistencies in Frank's narrative.
Key references to Voldemort and Wormtails mentions of 'murder' in the
American Edition-
PG 10-
Wormtail: "My Lord, Bertha Jorkins's disappearance will not go
unnoticed for long, and if we proceed, if I MURDER --"
Voldemort: "If?...(snip)... Come, Wormtail, one more DEATH, and our
path to Harry Potter is clear."
PG 12-
Frank: 'He was dangerous -- a madman. And he was planning more MURDERs
-- this boy, ...'
Voldemort: "One more MURDER... my faithful servant at Hogwarts...
Harry Potter is as good as mine,..."
Pg 13-
Frank: 'The only means of escape was into the room where two men sat
plotting MURDER, ...'
Thanks in advance.
