It's possible that Lily heard James and ran to baby Harry's bedroom
either to get him, as James seems to have wanted, or to block
Voldemort's way, which is suggested by Voldemort's "stand aside, girl"
(or "stand aside, silly girl," depending which version Harry is
hearing). There's nothing to indicate that she ran *outside.* She was
in Voldemort's way, not vice versa. As for having her wand handy, if
she had it and wanted to fight, as James did, why didn't she use it?
Why insist "Kill me instead" unless she not only knows about the
prophecy, but knows that her self-sacrifice (the ancient magic, with
or without a charm) is the only thing that can save her son?
vmonte responds:
I agree with you Carol. I think that Lily ran into Harry's bedroom.
Do you think that maybe Lily was the original owner of Harry's wand?
Maybe she did use it -- at the same time Voldemort used his. (I know
this is a big stretch).
JKR has mentioned that something happens at Godric's Hollow that
reveals the whole plot of the books. I think she actually told a fan
that she couldn't tell him what happened at Godric's Hollow because
there would be not point writing anymore of the books (I'm really
paraphrasing here--please correct me if I'm wrong).
What could this be? I think we must be assuming something that is
false about what happened at Godric's Hollow. Or, that we are
deducing something incorrectly. We never see what happens there, we
only hear voices. Was James there? Is that his voice we hear? Did
they originally believe the prophecy was about James (I'm making wild
guesses here). I admit that we also don't have all the facts about
that night.
It's got to be something pivitol that happens at GH or else why would
JKR make such a statement? I think we must find out something
important about one of the characters. Why does DD seems to always
know more than he should? Is he a seer, does he time-travel, is he
Ron? Or, could one of the children (Harry, Ron or Hermione) find out
how to time-travel without a time-turner. What if they try to go
back to Godric's Hollow to save Harry's parents. What if they get
there and only end up saving baby Harry. Then during the next 24
hours (remember the missing time between when Harry is collected and
when he is dropped off at the Dursley's) this kid tells DD everything
that has been going on in Harry's life up through the 1990's. (I have
to admit this scenario would upset me; although it would be funny if
the eavesdropper to the prophecy turned out to be Ron who was curious
to see who the eavesdropper was).

But here's where I get confused. The Prophecy happened three months
before Harry was born, probably before the Potters and the Longbottoms
had "thrice defied" Voldemort. The Fidelius Charm wasn't put in place
until much later, September or October of the following year. Did
Dumbledore wait more than a year to tell them? Was he waiting for the
third defiance? Did he have information from Snape? Did Sirius tell
James that he thought Remus was a spy? All the way around, the
Fidelius Charm seems like a desparate, last-minute measure. No wonder
Lily (apparently) saw the need for an alternate plan.
vmonte responds:
I am confused as well. It also seemed to me that DD did not know that
the Prophecy was about Harry until after his parents were killed.
Doesn't he tell Harry in OOTP that the prophecy could have been about
him or Neville? They weren't sure who it was about --not until
Voldemort made his choice.
