Debra:
Don't we know that Lily is muggle-born? We are always reminded of how 
Harry and VDM are both half-blood.. ((Then again, should wizards 
judge the percentage of magic in their blood by their parents or 
their grandparents? Or a combination of both? Because James was 
pureblood but Lily was also a witch, which in my opinion would make 
Harry more than half-magical in terms of his bloodline. And then 
there are Squibs..... but that's a discussion for another day.))

OK, i just did some minimal research on what we know of Lily's 
parentage, and found: 
"some o' the best I ever saw were the only ones with magic in 'em in 
a long line o' Muggles -- look at yer mum!" (Hagrid, SS/PS5)
"I know why you couldn't kill me. Because my mother died to save me. 
My common *Muggle-born* mother." (Harry, CS13)

So I guess it was always just kind of a given. But either way, I 
think it's entirely possible that Lily and Snape had a history, I 
just think the Perseus Evans thing is a bit far-fetched because I 
don't think JKR would re-use the whole anagram thing. (i.e. VDM.) 
Unless, of course, she's building up a theme on names... which is 
also possible...
