Okay, here's the first shot or two. What about Petunia? Also, 
Petunia says (in the hut on the rock) Our *parents* were so proud of 
her.

I do agree that there is a background between them; they've been at 
school together for five years by this scene. Think Hermione and 
Draco. Hermione wouldn't have taken that comment as calmly as Lily 
did, but then, she wouldn't be - -  I almost said she wouldn't have 
intervened if Harry did the same thing to Draco, but maybe she would 
have. I can't see Harry necessarily doing something to Draco just 
because Ron was board, but if he reacted to Draco in a similar way, 
Hermione probably would have intervened as calmly as Lily did. What 
would Harry have done to Draco at the end of OoP if Snape hadn't 
shown up when he did?
