Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe there is a place called Snape 
in England.  I have always assumed JKR took the name from there and 
the forename, Severus, just seemed to fit in so beautifully. The fact 
that it can be made so easily into an anagram is interesting though. 
And it does give free range to all sorts of beguiling theories, which 
are the life-blood of the board after all.
