Geoff:
Yes, but as I pointed out in my last post, canon states that he was 
allowed (unofficially?) to do magic to follow Harry and deliver his 
letter. Once he had Harry he was not to continue with magic.

That does not imply that once Harry was on the train and thus has not 
got Harry "he is allowed ter do a bit" (your comment) - rather the 
opposite obtains.

He should diminish and go into the West and remain Hagrid. :-)
