Ginger:
The first time I read it, I imagined Hagrid with his arms out flying 
airplane style.  
After I had read what was then the rest of the series, I was pretty 
sure that he had enchanted something, but what?
After reading OoP, I reread SS and went "Oh, Thestrals!"  They could 
find their way back on their own.  They can find anything, including 
a boy on the Holiday from Hell.  They are fast, and apparently not 
noticable.  Hagrid did say that DD used them if he didn't wish to use 
a broomstick.  
Not like Harry would have seen them even if they had hung around to 
make sure Hagrid could use the boat to get off the island.
