I too do not believe Lupin to be the type to
eavesdrop. I always thought that Lupin picked it up
from when Harry passed out from the dementors. When
Harry woke up:
"Harry! Harry! Are you all right?" someone was
slapping his face."
It never says specifically WHO is slapping his face or
calling his name. In fact it says that Ron and
Hermione were next to him and Lupin and Neville were
watching. It's not until Lupin comes back from talking
to the driver that Harry wonders how Lupin knew his
name. (pgs. 86 to 86 US)
