My "Mela" replied:
Wow, that line really got me. I was watching COS and the inteview with her and Steve Kloves tonight. She was talking about POA and she said that two VERY important characters pop up in this book: Lupin and Black. This got me because I, like just about every other fan was surprised she killed Sirius off..Face it it's time to admit it..I don't know anyone that actually thought he was going to die. If you did, and you can honestly say his death was predicted by you before reading OOP I would love you to correct me. I just don't think many people did.
But onto my main point of this reply: Sirius is not "gone" from the books. He is probably, with the exception of Harry and Dumbledore, one of the more important characters of the entire series. We see evidence of this in many situation but probably the one that is the most powerful is that she named an entire book after him. She had an entire book that was dedicated to Sirius, for one book the story was not about Voldemort but about Black.
Why do I think that makes him so important? I can't think of another character that hasd impacted Harry's life more than Sirius. Sirius gave him someone to confide in. The truth is he never would ask anything of Dumbledore not really but Sirius he could.
Why did she kill him off? Maybe to teach him a lesson that you can't depend on anyone? To show that war can kill even the most unlikely of people? Or maybe it's something deeper and maybe we will never know really. I personally believe it was to make Harry stronger so he didn't always depend on Sirius.
But honestly like Louis said their is no way that Sirius will not remain in the plot. At the very least he will be talked about by Harry. I mean the first sentence of the sixth book will probably be something along the lines Harry was having a bit better of a time at Number 4 Privet Dr. this summer, mainly because the Dursley's don't want any trouble from the order of the phoenix...cut to something about him coping with his godfather's death.
