My personal thoughts on your observations:

<snipped comment 1>

>2) Why would they battle right there? Simple. Because that's where

>Besides, you could hardly expect the Order members

>Bellatrix to fall through?

*Kimberly's comment*
LOL Yes, that was more of a rhetorical "Why were they fighting there", not exactly a literal question that warranted an answer. As for whether or not it would have bothered me if Bellatrix had fallen through, it actually would have. Not that I wouldn't rather her go than Sirius but more so that I thought after everything, that was just a dumb way to kill someone off. There, I said it. *G* It's like surviving a 10 car crash with no more than a broken thumb and the ambulance you're riding in on the way to the hospital gets into an accident and it proves fatal. There were so many times that Sirius was in danger (through out his life) and then "oops, watch out for that curtain". My speculation is that there is a reason it happened the way it did but until my limited vision sees it in print, I just don't care for the way he died.

<snipped 3 in agreement>

>4) "Why weren't they more careful?" Correct me if I'm wrong, but
>the way I read it, *Sirius alone* was the one who goaded her,
>saying "Come on, you can do better than that!" (Incidentally - what
>a funny sentence to end your life on!) Practically everybody else
>was exercising prudence, shouting out nothing but spells, but Sirius
>chose that moment to be a cocky show-off. He literally did INVITE
>her to do it.

*Kimberly's comments*
Oh he absolutely goaded her. He definitely got what he asked for and knew it the moment it hit him.

>5) Yes, Hermione did have an interesting reaction, didn't she?

*Kimberly again*
Indeed she did.

>A few final observations. As you say, it's all "evaporated potions"
>at this point - but the sad fact was, Sirius was meant to die.

(partial snip)

>Rowling wanted Sirius to die. It hurt her, but she did it.
>Morever, she orchestrated his death in a most unusual fashion; where
>his body accompanied him with his soul. I'd be very surprised if
>Rowling didn't have a reason for this. I really doubt that Sirius
>will simply be dropped from the plot. Take heart.

*Kimberly yet again*
I agree. Sometimes the simplest reason to the question "Why" is because that's how the storyline dictates. I feel we'll at least have more an idea of the function of the veil and perhaps some sort of communication with Sirius. I do believe however that he is indeed dead. My interpretation of the canon in no way leads me to believe that he will be brought back in bodily form.
