I agree with you. Most of us have good and bad traits; it's what 
makes us human! The more you learn about a character the more you 
will understand what motivates them.  Character development is 
necessary if you want the reading audience to understand, and or have 
compassion for your characters.  Character development turns the one 
dimensional into the three dimensional, and it's what makes words on 
paper come alive.
