Carol:
*Had* Scabbers been there all along? I thought the sneakoscope was
with Ron in Egypt, then with Harry at the Dursleys. IIRC, it went off
in Egypt (again because of Scabbers) and Bill thought it was defective
but Ron "explained" it as reacting the twins putting beetles in Bill's
soup.
I always thought that both Lupin and Crookshanks in the train scene
and the twins in Egypt were red herrings, and the real cause in both
cases was Scabbers.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, but what if the fact that we suspect Scabbers/Pettigrew is the real red herring....JKR may have written the scene to lead us to believe by the end of POA that it was going off in the train because of Scabbers being Pettigrew who had been the real secret keeper...but what if...and this pulls together several posts on other topics and the theory that Sirius wasn't killed by Bellatrix...what if the sneakoscope really was going off in response to Lupin...(for the record, don't try to kill me...I hope this is totally off base, but...)
What if, as someone suggested in a different thread of posts, there was another spy in the Order...someone other than Pettigrew...and what if that someone else was Lupin? What if Sirius and James really had a reason to mistrust Lupin? What if Lupin was a spy that helped introduce Pettigrew to LV...maybe not literally, but suggested to LV that he approach Pettigrew? This is theory and I can't really back it up, but the threads on the conspiracy theory of Sirius' death, this thread on the sneakoscope, along with some other thoughts running rampant in my little mind has led me to start wondering if mybe there was a spy we didn't know about and how better for JKR to throw us all off guard than for it to be someone we really have come to like? There is much we don't know about Lupin and there must have been more to the original mistrust by Sirius than what we know. Pull in the fact that he was in a position that it could have been him that killed Sirius and the fact that Severus
distrusts him...maybe there is a greater reason than the werewolf joke that causes this... Maybe the sneakoscope in response to Scabbers is intended to be taken in two different ways...
1st in relation to it's part of the plot of book 3 (POA), it is responding to Scabbers to alert us to the truth about Scabbers being Pettigrew and totally untrustworthy
and
2nd in relation to the plot of the entire series...that it is a red herring that Pettigrew, while being important is not the only one that is untrustworthy...that maybe Lupin was a spy that was never found out and the sneakoscope recognizes this and is going off in response to Lupin as well as to Scabbers...
Maybe, the sneakoscope is going off because of both of them...
Just a thought ...please don't throw things at me...I hope I'm way off base...I really do...I like Lupin, but I can't help but think that there is more going on with Lupin than we know....
