Dysis:
I just checked out some sites about the Hand of Glory, and it was 
mostly used by thieves. It was believed that if you lit the fingers 
of the Hand of Glory on fire, it would keep the household asleep and 
the thieves could then do their job. Mandrake roots are also used in 
sleeping porions, so there's another similarity between the two.

But what really struck me as important was the fact that Mandrake 
root potions can heal a person from being possessed by evil spirits. 
Could Mandrake roots help Harry's occlumency?
