them to solve the mystery. Wiser and more learned wizards like
Dumbledore would have "known" that basilisks don't petrify
people and they would have disregarded the fleeing spiders
and the slain roosters as disinformation--false clues left by The
Heir.

Just like certain listies disregard the Snape-vampire clues
because they "know" that vampires are dead and crumble to
 dust in the sunlight ;-)

"Hang on--this hasn't got anything to do with Vol- --sorry-- with
You-Know-Who, has it? You could just shake or nod," he added
hastily as Dobby's head tilted worryingly close to the wall again.

Slowly, Dobby shook his head.

"Not--not *He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, sir--"

But Dobby's eyes were wide and he seemed to be trying to give
Harry a hint. Harry, however, was completely lost. CoS-ch.2

"I've just got one question, Dobby," said Harry as Dobby pulled
on Harry's sock with shaking hands. "You told me all this had
nothing to do with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, remember?
Well--"

"It was a clue, sir," said Dobby, his eyes widening, as though this
was obvious. "Was giving you a clue. The Dark Lord, before he
changed his name, could be freely named, you see?" CoS ch.18

Identity is a tricky business. Voldemort, as I think Anne once
pointed out, transformed himself from a human into something
very much like a traditional vampire, and did it so completely that
in Dobby's mind at least, he had nothing to do with Tom Riddle.
But what if there was a vampire who transformed himself into a
human being?
