he also assumes that a basilisk can also petrify as that is what
happened last time.

Oooh!  I don't like this.  Roosters are cheap and easily had, and
their deadly-to-basilisks effects reach past their mere presence. 
Having mandrake is a great reactive response, but prevention is even
better!
