The thread of Dumbledore being Hermes was touched on one day last week, but, I didn't manage to respond on time. But with all that, it got me thinking about the pantheon of ancient mythologies, namely, Minerva, as in McGonnagall. Just looked it up to refresh the old memory:

"MINERVA , the goddess of wisdom, was the daughter of Jupiter . She was said to have leaped forth from his brain, mature, and in complete armour. She was also a warlike divinity; but it was defensive war only that she patronized. "

IMHO, this description really rings true of our Minerva. Could you have ever imagined her as a child? She always gives the impression of complete, controlled, thought out sense and wisdom--never gets ruffled. Also, when we look at her actions against those who attack what is right and good, for example telling Peeves how to unscrew the ceiling lamp during Umbridge's "Reign of Terror", we see that she isn't opposed to agression for the sake of defense. JKR's choice of name here is a strong clue to McGonnagall's character, and as far as I'm concerned, puts to rest those theories of ESE (ever so evil) McGonnagall. However, with all that said, I still wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of her--remember what happened to Arachne?
