Lynnette:
It is canon that Sirius was 16 years old at the time of the prank.
That means it happened during the 6th year if Sirius' age follows the
usual pattern. I do think this is when James stopped tormenting
Severus. It would be rather stupid to continue to provoke Snape when
he knew such a volitile scret about Lupin, regardless of whether or
not Professor Dumbledore had forbade him to reveal it.
I'd have to disagree with the (hopefully) highlighted bits.

And I quote:

' "And stopped hexing people just for the fun of it," said Lupin

"Even Snape?" said Harry

"Well,"said Lupin slowly, "Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an
opportunity to curse James, so you couldn't really expect James to take that
lying down, could you?'" '

If you ask me, this probably had a hand in James' 'deflation'

' "Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you've
just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down
corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can-I'm surprised
your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me
SICK."

"Oh, well, he always made a fool of himself whenever Lily was around," said
Sirius, shrugging. "He couldn't stop himself showing off whenver he got near
her."

This suggests to me he acted 'the big man on campus', not to mention a
complete idiot, because he wanted to impress Lily. I don't think that was his
entire motive, but I do think her giving him a verbal kick in the groin knocked
him down a few pegs.
