It is not canon. No where in the books has it said when the prank took
place, but I don't agree that the prank is what changed James. I think that it is
just a matter of James growing up. I don't think that James, even at his most
reckless would stand back and watch Severus be killed by werewolf
Lupin...because that would not only make him an accessory to murder and Sirius a
murderer...but it would get another friend, Lupin, into serious trouble and probably
kicked out of school. I think that James...regardless of how much he disliked
Severus...would not have let him be killed if he could stop it. It's just not
in his nature. And, honestly, I don't think that Sirius meant for Severus to
be killed...I just think that he didn't think the whole thing through. But
that is just my take on Sirius' personality. He hated Severus, yes, but he
wasn't prepared to kill him...he just didn't think about what he was doing. He
probably thought that Severus could get out in time. So, until
it is stated somewhere, I still think that the prank took place prior to the
OWLs.

Of course it is canon, page 286 UK version, paperback,
"Sirius Black showed he was capable of murder at the age of sixteen," he
breathed (Snape)."You haven't forgotten that, Headmaster? You haven't forgotten
that he once tried to kill me?"
