Jen: I've read suggestions that he is on a mission to recruit other
werewolves, but you have to wonder how many people that would
actually be? Recruiting seems a very delicate work, trying not to
give out too much information while discerning another person's
position & connections. Lupin would probably be good at this, but
the answer of recruiting other werewolves doesn't satisfy me.
Lupin's connections are few from what we've seen, and were seriously
diminished after Godric's Hollow. First he was ostracized by his
friends over being the possible spy, then in short order, the
Potters & Wormtail (supposedly) died, and Sirius went to Azkaban.
All his main connections severed.
After that, my guess is he traveled around looking for work. He
seems well-versed in dark creatures--perhaps he did research, or was
even a professor at another school. He did have that worn bag
with "Professor R.J. Lupin" embossed on it. It could be his father's
bag as some predict, but I think it was his and he was able to find
teaching work in a place where fewer questions were asked, and where
he was somewhat anonymous.
So, if he has connections to wizards in another area, perhaps he's
doing recruiting there, or, as he seems to be the scholarly type,
maybe he's researching something important or mobilizing dark
creatures for protection at Hogwarts.
That's all I can think of--anyone else?
