To assume Sirius would know who was currently teaching at his old 
school is a little far fetched. I don't know who is currently 
teaching in my old school.

As to Snape joining the staff, If he joined before riddle's downfall 
then I'd see it as that Snape changed side before Riddle was 
defeated. If however he joined after Riddles defeat it brigs into 
question, did Snape change sides or did he make a deal with 
Dumbledore when he was stuck in azkban.

According to the scene where Harry entered DD's pensieve, DD told Karkaroff that Snape had changed sides before the Dark Lord's fall at great risk to himself...

Then again in OOTP, when Umbridge asks Snape how long he had taught at Hogwarts, Severus answered "14 years"...so Harry was 15 in this book and 15 minus 14 equals 1...so Severus started the same year Harry turned 1 which would have been Sept. 1 before the Potters were attacked on Oct. 31....

Both of these references clearly show that Severus Snape was a Hogwarts teacher prior to Voldy's fall from power.
