Then again in OOTP, when Umbridge asks Snape how long he had taught at 
Hogwarts, Severus answered "14 years"...so Harry was 15 in this book and 15 minus 14 
equals 1...so Severus started the same year Harry turned 1 which would have 
been Sept. 1 before the Potters were attacked on Oct. 31....

Both of these references clearly show that Severus Snape was a Hogwarts 
teacher prior to Voldy's fall from power.

Harry would have been a 1 year old from 1981 - 1982. So Snape could have 
started teaching in September as you say, but also October, November and December 
and it still would have been 15 - 14 = 1.We don't have canon stating exactly 
when Snape started teaching at Hogwarts, it could have been before or after 
Voldemort's fall.
