Well, we may be discussing an issue that is totally unimportant. But
it seems to be one that raises curiosity. You can come up with two
different valid scenes based on canon. And without JKR around to
respond, we just don't know which is correct.

We do not know when DD vouched for Snape, nor do we know when
Karakoff's hearing was. What DD says is that Snape returned to our
side before LV's fall. He doesn't say "he became a teacher before
LV's fall."

Possibilty one: Snape works at his job by day, serves LV at
night and is telling all to DD. He helps to bring LV down. However
he and DD know LV will return so Snape takes the open teaching
position which was vacated when someone was killed in the spree
following LV's fall. But if he was hired in November, 14 years is
still correct. It would be in Snape's nature to be vague to
Umbridge. Also, he can go to LV post graveyard and say he had been
hoping LV would return and took the opportunity to teach at Hogwarts
where he could keep an eye on LV's enemy.

Possibility two: Snape works at his job by day, serves LV by
night and goes to DD. It's decided that Snape should suggest to LV
that he could take a teaching job at Hogwarts as a way of getting
info for LV, but he is really serving DD. He is hired at beginning
of term. 14 years is correct. LV is not surprised to see Snape there
and does not blow Snape's cover while hiding in turban. However, not
a trusting soul, he doesn't contact Snape either.

As for Serius, either way still works. In the first case, Sirius
would have been in Azkaban when Snape was hired. In the second, he
simply had no reason to know. Snape wasn't in the order nor was he
known to be a DE at that time.
